The Bible - The Word Of God

By Ronald Fabri

The Bible Has Special Power

What’s this?

The Word of God (the Bible) is living and active and, like a sword, has the power to divide.

“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Heb. 4:12)

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Eph. 6:17)

The Bible will separate man from sin, just as sin will separate man from God. The Word of God also has the power of reflection, as in a mirror. In the Bible we see ourselves as God sees us, and the way we see ourselves depends entirely on the way we choose to live. If we choose to live according to the Word of God, by obeying and doing the will of God, although we can never be perfect whilst we are still living as mortals on this earth, then we are able to see ourselves as striving for righteousness, therefore God sees us as righteous.

But if we choose to live in disobedience and rebellion and we manipulate the Word of God to suit our lifestyle, continue to do so without repentance and furthermore teach others to do the same, then, according to the Bible, we are living in a state of sin because sin is the transgression of the Law. (1 John 3:4) How then do we expect God to see us?  Are we still righteous in His eyes?

“Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.”   (James 1:21-25)

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.”   (Matt. 7:21)

The Bible claims that, like water, it has the power to cleanse. King David prayed that God would wash him from all iniquity and cleanse him from sin. We must never forget that Jesus Christ has redeemed us from all sin. He did not cover the sins of the world year by year as the High Priest did in the Old Testament, but He washed us white as snow in His blood once and for all.

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word.”   (Eph. 5:25-26)

The Bible also has power to nourish; it is spiritual food for the soul. No true believer can remain strong in the Lord and not study the Bible. We need to study the Word of God so as to prove all things and not be deceived by false doctrines, theology, philosophy and the teaching as doctrines the precepts of men. Jesus said to the Pharisees, “You are experts at setting aside the commandments of God in order to keep your traditions”, and this, sad to say, is happening right now in most Christian churches.

“Like new born babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation.”   (1Peter 2:2)

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.”   (Heb.5:12)
