I Met Bernard
Something happened to me today that has been burnt into my memory for good. That doesn’t happen very often.
ÂÂ
So here’s how it goes:
ÂÂ
I’m talking to Talia this morning. She mentions that Powderfinger hinted at doing a secret gig at the Zoo tonight at 8! I’m surprised, excited, and decide to check it out with Mike since she can’t make it.
ÂÂ
We get there at 7. There’s a line from the Zoo, all the way to Brunswick street, and around the corner as far as I could see.
ÂÂ
At the very least there were 600 people wanting to get in.
ÂÂ
The Zoo only holds half that.
ÂÂ
Disappointed, we shrug our shoulders. Then I have an idea! I say to Mike:
ÂÂ
Luke: “Hey, I’ve played at the Zoo before, you know?â€Â
Mike: “So?â€Â
Luke: “I know how to get backstage, it’s just around the corner.â€Â
ÂÂ
So we head backstage, expected to be stopped by security guards.
Not one.
But there was the Powderfinger manager, just about to ask us to leave, before Bernard tells us to wait a little way away till they finish their meeting.
ÂÂ
We did.
And then, a few minutes later, Bernard comes and chats with us!
ÂÂ
We talked about how long the line was, what they’ll be playing that night (4 or 5 songs off their new album), how viral their myspace blog post was (it got onto two radio stations), what it was like recording in LA, and general chit chat.
ÂÂ
We smiled, shook hands, he was completely normal, and not stuck up in the slightest. A very very nice guy.
ÂÂ
Then he said he had to get back to it, and we departed.
ÂÂ
Mike and I agree that meeting Bernard was even better than seeing them live, not to mention better than lining up for 2 hours and not even getting in.
ÂÂ
I’m still buzzing.
